BACK make a booking for Kakapo Encounter: stewartisland@iSITE.org The Ulva Island Trust The Ulva Island Charitable Trust was formed by a group of like minded Stewart Islanders in order to assist restoration and infrastructure work on the open sanctuary of Ulva Island. The idea of hosting a Kakapo was made possible by two years of negotiation with the Department of Conservation's Kakapo Recovery group, and the availability of 'Sirocco', a hand reared male who is not involved in the breeding programme. We see this as a double opportunity; A rare chance for interested persons to see one of the worlds conservation icons, and an opportunity to showcase Ulva Island and the huge level of Southern conservation success it embodies. Ulva Island is situated in Paterson Inlet and was freed of introduced pests by Community / Department of Conservation effort nearly 10 years ago. It plays a important role in the conservation of some of New Zealand's most threatened species, while still offering full public access. The Island is home to a number of rare native birds including Stewart Island Robins, Weka, Tui, Fantails, Kākā, Kākāriki, Kereru, Kiwi, Riflemen, Mohua, Little Blue and Yellow-eyed Penguins, and South Island Saddlebacks. The island offers a chance to see a relatively untouched part of New Zealand, and the increasingly teeming birdlife shows the huge value of pest eradication. We hope Ulva Island and Sirocco will inspire people to support and promote many more such projects around New Zealand and the rest of the World! BACK |
